Early this week, Mary Kekatos reached out to me regarding an article she was writing for the Daily Mail. The subject was the rise of teenagers who want back-to-school surgery.
During the discussion, she asked if I had seen an increase in my practice of teens coming in for breast augmentation. I stated that I had not, but I don’t dispute that there is an increase.
I also mentioned to her that teenagers haven’t fully developed until the age of 21 or 22, and therefore, if an enhancement is done earlier, the patient may need a second surgery.
However, when a teenager has congenital breast asymmetry, which is when there is an extreme discrepancy between the size of each breast, or when they have overly large breasts (such as a double F size), addressing this becomes a functional reconstruction rather than cosmetic surgery.
