Dr. Linder explains what the time-out process is before surgery. The surgical “time-out” represents the last part of the Universal Protocol. This is always performed in the operating room immediately before the planned procedure is initiated.  

Before we start surgery on a patient, the operating nurse — or the surgeon — will perform a time-out. This ensures that all members of the surgical team are on the same page. Components discussed include the patient’s name, medical record number, age, allergies, and the exact details of the surgery. We will also discuss what type of antibiotics we will be providing. 

The time-out represents the final recapitulation and reassurance of accurate patient identity, surgical site, and planned procedure.
